National Prevention Week, May 13-19, 2018

Wheeler’s Prevention, Wellness and Recovery staff and other members of Connecticut’s prevention community will take part in SAMHSA’s National Prevention Week, May 13-19. This week, supported by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) and planned by a statewide committee led by Wheeler staff, is an annual health observance dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around, mental and/or substance use disorders.

A Health & Wellness Fair and press conference at the State Capitol will help kick off this week on May 14, followed by an array of activities each day. In addition, organizations across the state will host events with their communities using various prevention and wellness themes to raise awareness and stimulate conversation, including mental health and wellness; underage drinking and alcohol misuse, prevention of prescription and opioid drug misuse, prevention of illicit drug use and youth marijuana use; and suicide and tobacco use prevention. The weekly observance will end on May 19 with National Prevention Week night at the Hartford Yard Goats game that will include the premiere showing of the contest winning prevention PSAs on the jumbotron, on-field presentation by the DMHAS Commissioner, information dissemination, fireworks and more.
