Mindfulness Training Available through Wheeler’s Family Health & Wellness Center, 43 Woodland Street, Hartford

Wheeler’s Family Health & Wellness Center at 43 Woodland Street, Hartford now offers group and individual training in mindfulness, the practice of paying attention to the present moment using techniques such as breathing and meditation. Mindfulness is often used a strategy to manage physical pain, as well as emotional stress.

Charles Schad, a mindfulness facilitator, will lead all training for adults who are patients at this facility, including group sessions based on the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) model, an empirically-supported 8-week psycho-educational group intervention that teaches mindfulness meditation as a health intervention. Mr. Schad also will introduce the idea of mindfulness at the end of recovery group sessions, and work on an individual basis with Wheeler consumers as needed.

“Mindfulness is a process that reacquaints individuals with the way they experience life,” he said. “It’s a way of halting ‘automatic’ behaviors and causes us to more carefully consider the present, as well as the full implication of our actions and decisions.”
