Visibility Campaign: Ramona Thomas

Throughout Black History Month, we are continuing our Visibility Campaign series where we look to increase visibility of our Black staff, as well as our staff who have a passion for support and advocacy. Today's spotlight goes to Ramona Thomas, MS, Program Supervisor, Care Coordination in Hartford.

Ramona who is bi-racial, African American and Italian, has been with Wheeler for almost 2 years. She has been working with children and families who suffer from mental and behavioral health issues and have a need for connections to their communities since 2015. Ramona's passion has always been helping others in breaking down barriers for accessing care. Wheeler has continued to help her learn and grow professionally and personally and she is happy to be a part of our inclusive, non-discriminative, and anti-racist organization.

What are some ways people can advocate for the Black community right now? It’s everyone’s responsibility to speak up and advocate against racism, systemic injustice, and other inequities. Other ways to advocate include supporting organizations within your community and becoming an ally. It can be as simple as attending your local town and/or state advisory board and committee meetings.

How do you feel we can better reach the Black community? Together, we all can collaborate to help better reach the Black community by continuing to learn, attend community meetings, and speak up for what’s right. You can also make it a point to help support Black-owned businesses and Black media.

Thank you, Ramona, for sharing your story!
