Back to School - Unpacking the Mental Backpack

Our Melissa Mendez, LCSW, IMH-E, Director of Early Childhood Programs at Wheeler, participated in a August 26 virtual event from the YWCA Hartford Region, "Back to School: A Conversation Unpacking the Mental Backpack."

From the YWCA:

"This year our children return to school with more on their backs than backpacks. Over the past year and a half our children have had to bare the traumas of the pandemic with far less resources than their adult counterparts. Adolescence is hard enough.

Additionally, children have been asked to continue on their path of academic achievement while navigating a world that seems to be in turmoil. Our children need more than school supplies to prepare for the upcoming school year.

Parents and students join us for a conversation that explores the impact of the pandemic on adolescent mental health and equips youth with the tools, resources and community support they need to succeed during these unique times."
