A special reception celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Family Support Center (FSC) will be held October 30, 2008. The FSC is a cutting-edge, evidence-based intervention program for Family With Service Needs-youth referred by juvenile probation. The program is a multi-service “one-stop center” that provides FWSN referred juveniles comprehensive assessment, intervention, educational advocacy, parent support, crisis response, referral, case management and psycho-educational groups to more than 100 Hartford youth per year who reside in the six communities served by the Hartford Superior Court – Juvenile Matters. The FSC addresses the needs of juveniles and their families with support and intervention, effectively preventing prolonged involvement within the court system. The event will also showcase the clinic's many other Hartford-based programs and services.

This no-obligation open house provides information about the Children in Families therapeutic foster care program. Interested persons may stop in between 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. to learn about foster care without making a commitment of any kind. Individuals are also needed to join Families Finding Families, Wheeler Clinic’s corps of volunteer recruiters who help spread the word about the need for caring and skilled foster parents.

  Tobacco Use Prevention Wrkshop

“Tobacco Industry Influence in Our Communities: Using Advocacy and Counter-marketing Effectively,” This workshop is part of the ongoing Connecticut Institute for Tobacco Education and Training.

The morning workshop will be led by Perry Stevens, MPA, a communications consultant who works with Emory University’s national Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium. He is a developer of the “Basics of Tobacco Control” DVD and has worked with 50 tobacco control advocates and professionals in the Southern States Advocacy Project. Previously, he served as press office and health communications specialist with the Office on Smoking and Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A panel discussion on Connecticut-specific counter-marketing will start the afternoon, and the closing workshop will be led by Nikki Palmieri, Miss Connecticut 2004-05, who continues to be vocal on the national level about anti-tobacco initiatives and serves as a consultant to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and other organizations.

The Institute for Tobacco Education and Training will offer an additional free workshop this spring on June 6, 2007 co-sponsored with the VA Connecticut Healthcare System to be held at their Newington campus. The topic will be “Smoking Cessation: Offering the Appropriate Program.” Persons interested in attending the conference, or who would like further information, may call Wheeler Clinic at (860) 793-2164 or e-mail dwiniarski@wheelerclinic.org by April 4, 2007.   Free Tobacco Prevention Wkshop

“Smoking Cessation: Offering the Appropriate Program” - a free workshop offered by The Institute for Tobacco Education and Training.

Speakers will include Dr. Judith L. Cooney, researcher at the VA Healthcare System and also a professor of psychiatry at the University School of Medicine. Several of Dr. Cooney’s colleagues from the Newington and West Haven VA sites will speak as well. In addition, Dr. Benjamin Toll, Dr. Lucile Burgo-Black and Dr. Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin from Yale University will present sessions. Smoking cessation providers from St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport will discuss a promising teen curriculum.

Cessation programs will be viewed from a variety of perspectives. Speakers will discuss methods to insert cessation into alcohol and other substance abuse treatment settings. Successful approaches with weight-concerned smokers will be presented. Primary care settings will be promoted as effective sites to offer cessation as well. Staff from the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services will review ongoing attempts to curb use through sting operations and will discuss the ways that the tobacco industry promotes cigarette sales near schools and what is being done to stop it.

  Free Mental Health Screening

Have you been feeling consistently moody or sad? Can't relax or concentrate? Are you unable to eat or sleep? Have you been troubled by unexplained aches and pains? If so, you may have a mental health disorder.

Wheeler Clinic is holding free, anonymous, walk-in mental health screenings for adults, 18 years of age and older between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m.

The screenings will address depression, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and bipolar disorder. Participants will complete a short self-assessment, talk with a mental health professional, and be referred to treatment services if needed. No appointments are necessary.

Workplace Etiquette: Why Being Polite Counts on the Job (DVD-24 Min.) There's a right way and a wrong way to behave in the workplace. Doing things the wrong way can result in getting fired, while doing things the right way can result in job security, salary increases and promotions. Using acted-out scenarios in common workplace settings, plus commentary from real bosses, the video shows teens conducting themselves inappropriately and then models what is appropriate. This no-obligation open house provides information about the Children in Families therapeutic foster care program. Interested persons may stop in between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. to learn about foster care without making a commitment of any kind. Individuals are also needed to join Families Finding Families, Wheeler Clinic’s corps of volunteer recruiters who help spread the word about the need for caring and skilled foster parents.

The Foster Care program works with foster parents to provide education, 24-hour support, childcare, respite and compensation for the foster child's expenses. The program serves girls and boys, 6 to 16 who need foster homes. Mature adults who are single or married, working or at home, are encouraged to apply to become foster parents.
