EXPLORE Domestic Violence Intervention

When battering occurs between a man and a woman, everyone in the family is affected. Wheeler Clinic's EXPLORE intervention program provides offenders with the information and skills they need to change their behaviors, alter their beliefs and learn to improve their current and future relationships.

The EXPLORE program is a 26-week group service that emphasizes peer confrontation, skills training and education for men referred from Bristol, Hartford, New Britain, Enfield and Bantam courts.

Program Services

• Two session assessment including substance abuse evaluation and risk assessment
• 90-minute weekly group sessions targeting domestic violence issues
• Individualized treatment planning for the offender
• Psychiatric consultation as needed
• Concurrent, collaborative substance abuse and/or gambling treatment
• Referral for other services as necessary
• Ongoing, confidential communication with the partner
• Information about local resources for partners

Family Violence is a Crime

The EXPLORE Intervention Program is designed to collaborate closely with criminal courts and local domestic violence shelters. This cooperative effort helps to increase victim safety and help the victim gain a better understanding of the batterer.
