Discovery of sexual abuse or trauma can be a frightening and confusing
experience. The goal of treatment is to offer family support and assistance
in dealing with issues related to sexual abuse. Our team of specialists
develops an individualized approach and treatment plan for each person
and his / her family.
The entire family often needs to be involved
in the treatment process to help each member recover from the impact of
the sexual abuse.
A sexually reactive child is one who engages other young children in sexual
contact. This behavior is different from normal sexual play in that the
behavior is above the childs developmental age, specifically behavior
he or she would only know through observation or experience.
Additionally, there are children who have been
exposed to sexually inappropriate material who may become overwhelmed
and lack a direction or outlet for their feelings. Some of these children
may have learned behaviors from being abused themselves. They can often
feel overwhelmed, distressed and confused.
Parents and other important adults are essential
elements of the childs treatment. They help monitor the childs
behavior and become important partners in the treatment process.
Wheeler Clinic professionals have extensive experience working with adolescents
who have been referred because of sexual offenses or problems with sexual
behavior.
Group treatment requires participants to discuss their offense and accept
responsibility for the impact their actions have upon others. Participants
also challenge one another to examine the thoughts, feelings and behaviors
that contributed to their sexual offense.
This treatment program requires a strong commitment
from both the adolescent client and the important adults in their lives.
It is essential for responsible adults to supervise the clients
daily activities and participate in family sessions in order to best support
the client.
