(Therapeutic after school
programming for children & adolescents)
The Extended Day Treatment Programs offer intensive after school treatment
designed to help young people (6-18) and families establish more positive
ways
of interacting. The programs provide an opportunity for the adolescent
to remain with the family and in the community, significantly reducing
the potential for out-of-home placement. Separate programming is offered
for child and adolescent age groups.
The Extended Day Program is a collaborative effort of the
Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF), Wheeler Clinic,
and local
public
schools. The Extended Day Programs provide:
- Intensive, highly structured outpatient treatment
in the community
- An alternative to residential placement and/or hospitalization
- An opportunity For ADOLESCENTS/adolescents to remain
at home or in community foster care and attend their own school
- Having problems in school - behavior, truancy, or
a decline in academic performance
- Exhibiting delinquent behaviors such as vandalism
or stealing
- Experimentally or moderately involved in substance
abuse
- Being discharged from an inpatient psychiatric and/or
substance abuse program
Those who can benefit most from the Extended Day Programs are males and
females from 6 to 18 who:
- Otherwise would be in residential treatment or other
inpatient facility
- Are returning to the community after residential
or hospital placement
- Are having difficulty maintaining age-appropriate
behavior at home, in school and/or the community foster care and attend
their own school
